In addition to producing its own tissue paper under the Crystal Paper Group brand for industry and individual consumers, the Group also sell raw materials used in making tissue paper to other, smaller manufacturers. This diversity has helped the company to thrive despite the current adverse economic conditions.

Rafik Dosani, the company’s CEO, explained the development of the company: “I came to South Africa from England in August 1987 with no knowledge of the paper industry. We found one of the smallest tissue mills in Africa, running literally three tonnes a day.

While instances of contamination have been few, the presence of foreign bodies in a vaccine that is intended to be injected is obviously a serious matter. In 2008, the FDA issued a letter of warning to Merck over substandard practices at the company’s Pennsylvania manufacturing plant.

Since then, a number of other issues have been highlighted by FDA inspections, although none were sufficiently serious to merit a further warning letter. Merck has stated that it has addressed all the issues found by the inspections.

James Robinson, Merck’s vice president of vaccines product and technical operations, explained: “We do have a complex operation. What we are seeing is that the severity and criticality of observations [by FDA inspectors] are declining. What we’ve seen in the last few inspections tells us we’re on the right track.”

So far there have been twelve instances of shrink wrap being found in vaccines, with eight of these being found by consumers and four caught by Merck’s own internal quality control procedures.

According to a recent story in the Austrian Times, the new boxes will first be tested in seven council houses in Vienna to gauge the effectiveness of the new system.

Under the scheme, secure electronic postal boxes will be placed close to existing post boxes. If a parcel is delivered to a household and there is no one there to accept it, the parcel will be deposited in the electronic box. The recipient will receive notice of the delivery, and also a key card which will open the box.

The card can only be used to open the box once, and after it has been used and the parcel picked up it is to be dropped back in the box where it can then be reused the next time the box is needed. If a box is not picked up by the customer within seven days, it will be taken back to the post depot where it can be collected at a later date.

Should the trial prove successful, it is thought that the scheme will be implemented throughout Austria over the coming months.

Due to their fragile nature, clothes can be damaged while in transit if not packaged suitably. However, this results in a high level of waste. Polybags are a particular problem, as the type of plastic they are made out of is not easily recyclable using standard methods. In many states, these polybags end up in landfill sites, which is bad for the environment.

In order to tackle this issue, North Face has teamed up with TerraCycle, who will take all the used polybags from North Face stores and reprocess them into a variety of different products which will be available to buy online through their website. The product range includes everything from kitchen utensils to reusable tote bags.

Although the partnership is still in the early stages, TerraCycle has already obtained more than 700,000 polybags from North Face, turning what was once a useless waste product into a valuable raw material.

The North Face was first established in 1966, and has established a reputation as a leading retailer of outdoor clothing and equipment.

Designed to be a cheap alternative to wooden or metal containers, the new boxes are made from high-grade polypropylene, which gives them a strength and rigidity that makes them ideal for a number of industrial applications.

The Daily Mail has an ongoing campaign running called Banish the Bags, to which both David Cameron and Nick Clegg lent their support prior to coming into office. However, since coming to power, their progress on the issue has been severely lacking.

Mr Goldsmith has tabled an early day motion in the House of Commons to support the Daily Mail’s campaign, and it is expected to receive the full backing of all parties when it is read.

Speaking on the issue, Mr Goldsmith explained: “Plastic bags cause immense damage throughout the world, and absolutely symbolise the mindlessness of our throwaway society. The Government needs to accept that the voluntary approach simply hasn’t worked, and that it’s time for a bit of leadership.

“The Mail’s campaign has shown that introducing a charge or even a ban would be effective, straightforward and popular with much of the public. The Government’s approach to waste has been pretty miserable, and action on this issue would bolster its green credentials.”

The Welsh parliament recently introduced such a charge using powers granted under devolution, with the money raised being donated to a number of charitable causes. Mr Johnson indicated that he had been following the Welsh scheme closely, and felt that London would benefit from a similar arrangement.

One potential stumbling block for the plan is the fact that the mayor currently does not have the power to impose such a charge. However, the power could be granted if Westminster gave special dispensation for the move, which it could do under the terms of the Climate Change Act 2008.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mr Johnson announced his intention to have the scheme in operation for the 2012 Olympic Games, which will be held in London. While there is already a voluntary bag reduction plan in place, it has so far proved largely ineffective, with the number of plastic bags being used in the capital actually rising this year.

It is estimated that the 5p charge would raise roughly £3 million each year for charity, and could help to cut plastic bag use in the city by up to 90%.
