UK packaging firm develops compostable padded envelopes

COB Products, a UK eco-friendly packaging manufacturer based in Surrey, has developed a new range of compostable padded envelopes and bubble wrap which are fully compliant with the EN 13432 standard.

Just as strong and durable as conventional packaging products, the new padded envelopes and bubble wrap – sold under the brands COBvelope and COBwrap – offer a greener solution to protective packaging needs. What’s more, thanks to their non-toxic nature, they are also certified as safe to use for food contact applications.

The new products are manufactured from a biopolymer resin known as Bio-Flex, which is derived from corn. The resin itself was first produced by FKuR Kunststoff GmbH, a firm that specialises in bio-plastics.

Jim Payne, managing director of COB Products, explained: “We’re really excited about COBwrap and COBvelope. We’re the only people producing and selling padded envelopes that are made from a renewable material and are completely compostable.

“Using our products is a great way for companies to demonstrate to their customers that they care about their impact on the environment.

“Normal padded envelopes are composed of at least two dissimilar materials bonded together. As they can’t be separated, this makes recycling any of the materials difficult. At the end of its lifecycle, a COBvelope can be sent to an industrial or municipal composting facility, where it will biodegrade into water, carbon dioxide and harmless biomass.”
