Tetra Pak South Africa creates jobs through carton recycling programme
Tetra Pak is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of packaging cartons, and their South African division has recently launched a new carton recycling initiative that will help to reduce their carbon footprint while also saving the company money.
Under the new programme, Tetra Pak will form a partnership with Gayatri Paper Mills, who will use hydropulping technology to break down the cartons into their constituent fibres, which can then be re-purposed into board that will be fed back into the packaging industry for use in other applications.
Tetra Pak South Africa’s environmental manager Rodney Reynders explained: “We have been working together [with Gayatri Paper Mills] to create an integrated waste management plan that will be submitted to government. It is only in the draft stage, but it encourages a twin-bag waste removal system, which will help consumers to separate waste at the source.
“We are trying to tap into a greater amount of waste in South Africa at a consumer level – hence, our drive to influence legislation to encourage greater separation of waste at source, which would help to get more recyclables into waste streams from where they can be recycled.”
