Winner announced in fifth annual bubble wrap competition
Sealed Air, the company who first invented and developed bubble wrap, have announced the winner of their fifth annual Bubble Wrap Competition for Young Inventors.
The competition was won by Lillith Bulawa, a New York schoolgirl who designed a floating garden to help protect crops in areas vulnerable to flooding. The garden is self-watering, and is contained within a box surrounded by bubble wrap. The bubble wrap is buoyant enough to ensure that the garden simply rises above the water level should flooding occur.
William V. Hickey, Sealed Air’s president and chief executive offer, stated: “Each year we find it more and more challenging to select a grand prize winner as all the inventions submitted are astounding.
“Although only one can go home with the grand prize, all of the inventors in this year’s Bubble Wrap Competition for Young Inventors are winners and should be very proud of what they have accomplished.”
The competition was open to schoolchildren anywhere in the US, with each of the finalists having to create a full working prototype of their invention to present to a panel of judges. Ms Bulawa received a $10,000 savings bond as her prize, and a donation of $5,000 was made to her school.
