New type of cellophane to be used to package flower bulbs

NatureFlex NVS, a new type of cellophane which is compostable and derived from cellulose, has been chosen by a group of three Dutch bulb exporters as a biodegradable alternative to traditional packaging films.

The new type of cellophane was developed by Innovia Films, a leading manufacturer of packaging materials, and developed into a suitable pack for transporting flower bulbs by Hapece Flexible Packaging, a packaging design firm based in Assen.

Hapece were able to use NatureFlex to create a three-part pouch pack which cushions and protects the bulbs in transit, while allowing the end customer to view the bulbs through the transparent film.

Marius Draayer, managing director of Hapece, explained: “Our customers were looking for an attractive, quality pack which was eco-friendly, innovative and would ensure the contents were clearly visible.

“From a converter’s point of view, the addition of NatureFlex NVS to this application has also ensured that the pack can stand upright due to the deadfold properties and stiffness it provides.”

NatureFlex’s eco-friendly credentials are well established, as not only is the material fully compostable after use, but it is also manufactured from wood pulp taken from managed woodlands which operate under established Good Forestry guidelines.
